Traditional Greek Salad Recipe

Cooking Greek salad. This is a traditional dish, which in Greece and other Mediterranean countries is more familiar under the name Horiatiki (from Greek – village salad). Traditionally, the salad is distinguished by a large cut of vegetables. This salad is a great side dish to any main dish, or it can be eaten on its own as a light lunch.
The popularity of the salad is easily explained: it is simply and quickly prepared, thanks to the addition of cheese and olives it turns out to be quite satisfying, and, which is not very often, tasty and healthy at the same time. So, let’s get down to cooking, and a detailed step-by-step recipe will help you prepare a great Greek salad.

● Pitted olives – 100 g
● Lemon – 0.5 pcs.
● Olive oil – 3-4 tbsp. l.

2. Wash the cucumber, cut lengthwise into 4 parts and cut into large “cubes”.
3. Remove the seeds from the pepper and wash. If desired, you can cut off the white part in the middle of the pepper. Then cut it into large cubes or in any other convenient way.

6. Combine the juice of half a lemon with olive oil, salt, ground black pepper and chopped fresh basil leaves. Leaves should be washed, dried and finely chopped.
7. Mix the salad dressing well. If desired, you can add a clove of garlic to the dressing.
8. Mix the salad well and season. Transfer the salad to serving bowls and drizzle with dressing just before serving.
9. First, combine the tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and bell peppers and mix everything gently.
10. Arrange these ingredients in serving bowls lined with lettuce.
Then arrange the feta cheese and olives nicely on top. And only after that, just before serving, pour over the salad dressing.

Tips and Tricks
● You can season such a salad immediately before serving, or serve the dressing separately, and then the guests themselves will be able to add it to taste. But then the dressing needs to be prepared in larger quantities.
● If desired, cucumbers can be cut into rings or in any other way convenient for you. Before use, greenhouse cucumbers are best soaked in water at room temperature for 20-30 minutes, you can also add a little soda to the water. In addition, it is best to cut the skin from such vegetables.
● In order for the cheese not to crumble, it is best to cut it with a knife dipped in water. The knife must be dipped in water each time before use.
● Dry herbs such as oregano are often used as a seasoning for this salad. You can also use a dry mix of Italian or Greek herbs.

Can I put Letuce to my Greek Salad?
More often there are recipes for Greek salad with the addition of lettuce leaves. In the version considered classic, lettuce leaves are not put, and it seems to me that they are not needed here. But here again, it’s up to you, if you wish, you can add leaves of any salad.
